9/22/2011? The Salem Apple Butter Festival provides live demonstrations of old-fashioned apple butter making. Apple butter is made outdoors in copper kettles suspended over a wood fire and canned on the spot for visitors to purchase. Other attractions include: live entertainment daily, fireworks, food, crafts, apple pie baking contest, parade, quilt show, 5K run, bicycle poker ride, celebrity auction, pet show-off, talent show, car show, horseshoe pitching and cornhole tournaments. The theme for this year’s festival is “WV Pumpkin Pickin’ Party." Located in Milton, between the two cities of Huntington and Charleston, the festival was designed to help farmers with the raising and selling of pumpkins. Attractions and activities include: apple butter making, sorghum molasses making, lye soap making, broom making, blacksmithing, weaving, spinning and pottery making, largest pumpkin weighing contests, arts & crafts, 5K pumpkin run/walk, parade, pageants, chainsaw artist, local and national entertainers including Nashville artist T. Trail Fest is West Virginia’s premier ATV, UTV and dirtbike trail riding event of the year! The colorful brilliance of Southern West Virginia’s deciduous forest provides the backdrop to this family-oriented event. The area’s premier fall festival began in 1978 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Oglebay and provides an annual “thank you” to all who visit Oglebay year-round. Activities include food; fun and educational activities for health and wellness; West Virginia gourmet foods plus Oglebay signature items and fall garden produce; the tri-state’s best artisans at work plus an extensive display of fine handcrafted wares; elaborate quilts, homegrown foods and gentle animals on Saturday and Sunday; demonstrations and competitions for all ages including quilting demonstrations, 4-H rabbit show and auction, butter making, hog calling, fiddling, rock throwing and baby crawling competitions. The annual Burgoo Cook-off is held each Columbus Day weekend in October at the Baker's Island Recreation Area located in downtown Webster Springs. Cash prizes are awarded for burgoo entries in various categories. Burgoo is a highly seasoned stew made of a combination of fowl, game, other meats and vegetables. The West Virginia Chestnut Festival is held each year to honor the rebirth of the chestnut tree. The day is all about chestnuts as in “chestnuts roasting on an open fire” in the Rowlesburg Park; scientific presentations concerning the birth, death and rebirth of this great tree; vendors selling wood items ranging from kitchenware collectables, picture frames and wood handle Damascus steel knives all made from chestnut; Preston High Madrigal Singers, honey made from chestnut nectar and the sale of chestnut saplings. This scenic 2 1/2 hour train excursion winds its way along the beautiful South Branch of the Potomac River as passengers enjoy a catered prime rib dinner by Gourmet Delights.
