WVSBDC Announces 2011 State Star Awarded to Jamie Gaucher

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Jamie Gaucher was recently honored as a 2011 State Star during the national meeting of the Association of Small Business Development Centers, announced Kristina Oliver, state director of the West Virginia Small Business Development Center (WVSBDC).

Gaucher is a business coach with the WVSBDC, part of the West Virginia Development Office.

“The State Star award recognizes Jamie for his dedication to serving entrepreneurs, assisting West Virginia’s technology sector and strengthening the economy of the state,” Oliver said. "He has expertly provided business coaching, with particular knowledge in technology-based development, to small businesses. His skills have resulted in West Virginia’s small businesses gaining greater access to capital and increasing job creation."

Each year during its national conference, the ASBDC recognizes an outstanding employee from each of the SBDC programs as a State Star. The 2011 meeting was held Sept. 6 in San Diego, Calif.

Gaucher has been with the West Virginia Development Office since 2000 and was manager of technology-based development. He joined WVSBDC in 2007. Currently he manages the West Virginia Small Business Innovation Research and the Small Business Technology Transfer (SBIR/STTR) programs. The federal SBIR/STTR programs provide a billion dollars each year in early-stage research and development awards and contracts to small technology companies.

He earned national Technology Counselor Certification from the ASBDC, making him among the nation’s few certified technology business coaches. The certification recognizes expertise in five core competency areas: technology transfer and commercialization, research and development funding, intellectual property issues, technology networking/resource identification and alternative financing (equity). The designation as a certified technology business coach is reserved for those who assist high technology businesses with commercialization and growth.

The WVSBDC is part of the West Virginia Development Office and creates economic impact through offering entrepreneurs and small businesses cost-effective business coaching and technical assistance. The West Virginia SBDC is funded in part through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration.
